The Eight Mountains

The Eight Mountains tells the story of a profound and enduring friendship between two men, Pietro and Bruno, that spans decades and the breathtaking backdrop of the Italian Alps.

Pietro is a city boy from Milan whose parents often take him to a small village in the Aosta Valley for their holidays. It’s there, as a child, that he meets Bruno, a local boy who lives a solitary life tending to his family’s cows and knows the mountains intimately. Despite their different backgrounds, an immediate and strong connection forms between them during those summer months.

As they grow into adulthood, their paths diverge. Pietro initially drifts away, exploring the world and pursuing different experiences, while Bruno remains rooted in his mountain village, working various jobs and maintaining a deep connection to the land. However, the pull of their shared past and the mountains eventually draws Pietro back.

When Pietro’s father passes away, he inherits a dilapidated stone cabin in a remote part of the Alps, a place his father had cherished. Seeking solace and a connection to his father’s memory, Pietro returns to the mountains and rekindles his friendship with Bruno, who helps him renovate the cabin.

The film beautifully portrays the cyclical nature of their relationship, with periods of closeness and distance, mirroring the changing seasons in the mountains. They face personal challenges, make different life choices, and at times misunderstand each other, but their bond, forged in childhood amidst the towering peaks, remains a constant.
