Mickey 17

Mickey 17 is a science fiction film set during a human expedition to colonize the icy planet Niflheim. Robert Pattinson stars as Mickey Barnes, who takes on the role of an “Expendable” – a disposable crew member assigned to extremely dangerous tasks. The unique aspect of the Expendables is that if they die, their bodies can be regenerated with most of their memories intact through a process called “reprinting.”

Mickey 17 is the seventeenth iteration of Mickey to serve in this capacity. During one particularly hazardous mission, Mickey 17 is presumed dead after falling into a crevasse and being swarmed by the native lifeforms, called “Creepers.” However, instead of being killed, the Creepers help him out of the fissure unharmed.

Upon his return to the human colony, Mickey 17 discovers that a new clone, Mickey 18, has already been printed as his replacement. The colony’s strict rules forbid the existence of multiple versions of the same individual. Faced with this unprecedented situation, Mickey 17 and Mickey 18 must figure out how to coexist and keep their duplication a secret from the colony’s leader, Marshall (Mark Ruffalo), and the security forces, including Kai (Anamaria Vartolomei).

As they navigate the complexities of their shared identity and the dangers of Niflheim, including the potentially hostile Creepers, Mickey 17 and Mickey 18 begin to question their expendable status and the ethical implications of their existence. The film explores themes of identity, survival, and the value of life in a harsh and unforgiving environment, as the two Mickeys try to find their place in a colony that sees them as utterly replaceable.
